Linaro ARM server efforts targets Linux code

SAN JOSE, Calif. – ARM-based servers will get some of the low-level Linux software they need thanks to a new initiative in Linaro, the non-profit group that has been developing open-source code for mobile Linux on ARM.

The Linaro Enterprise Group (LEG) forming now will set a road map for its efforts in the next several weeks with first code coming before the end of the year. It expects to develop open source versions of a common boot environment, system image and other optimizations needed for Linux-based ARM servers.

Other likely projects will include virtualization software for the Linux kernel, enabling code for SIMD accelerators, server system libraries and benchmarking and tuning tools. The group’s efforts may help improve Linux kernel latency for ARM.

“If we don’t do this together, we will have duplication and get a repeat of what happened in mobile space,” said George Grey, chief executive of Linaro, formed in June 2010 by six companies to consolidate their efforts on open source code for mobile Linux software on ARM.

Initial members of LEG consist of a mix of SoC, system and software developers. They include Advanced Micro Devices, ARM, Applied Micro, Calxeda, Canonical, Cavium, HiSilicon, Hewlett-Packard, Marvell, Red Hat, Samsung and STMicroelectronics.
