EDA standards bodies Accellera, OSCI merge

SAN FRANCISCO—As expected, EDA and intellectual property (IP) standards development organizations Accellera and the Open SystemC Initiative (OSCI) said Monday (Dec. 5) their members and boards have approved their merger.

The merged entity, to be known as the Accellera Systems Initiative, is chartered to create comprehensive system-level and semiconductor design standards to benefit the electronic design community by facilitating efficient collaboration among its worldwide members, the organizations said in a statement.

In June, Accellera and OSCI announced they had signed a memorandum of understanding to form a single organization that would leverage the complementary EDA standards efforts of both groups.

Shishpal Rawat, Accellera's chair, said overlapping member companies and aims made both organizations feel that the merger was the right course of action. Rawat said he will remain chair of the merged entity until previously scheduled elections are held in two months. The board of the merged entity will be expanded to encompass the board members from both organizations, he said. "It didn't make sense to choose new officers for two months," he said.

Rawat said the next step is to review the work of the technical committees of each organization and prepare for merging those. But for now, he said, committees will continue to operate as they had been. "The committees in each organiztion had certain work in progress," Rawat said. "We would like to see that work completed."

"As Accellera and OSCI come together, we should expect accelerated development and adoption of standards across various ESL domains," said Gary Smith, chief analyst at Gary Smith EDA.

Last year, Accellera merged with The Spirit Consortium.
