Intel extends semiconductor lead for 2011 Electronics News

INTEL will take back the semiconductor crown decisively in 2011, according IHS iSuppli, with a 15.9 percent share of the market, up from 13.2 percent in 2010.

Aggressive competition within the sector, particularly from Samsung Electronics, meant Intel lost its lead over a number of years. However, Intel has had strong sales and made a number of strategic acquisitions which boosted its position.

The 2011 figures indicate Intel will sell $49.7 billion worth of semiconductors in 2011, a 23 percent rise from 2010’s $40.4 billion.

Intel now leads Samsung by 6.5 percentage points. In 2010, that difference was 3.9 percentage points.

Intel expanded its core microprocessor and memory businesses, deriving most of its revenue from microprocessor units and NAND flash memory, which were big segments of growth for the industry in 2011.

It also acquired Infineon Technologies’ wireless solutions business.

In contrast, while Samsung is also riding on the NAND wave, it was vulnerable to the weakness of the DRAM market, a sector that declined by 27 percent in 2011.
